The University of Toronto Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) provides residents with the opportunity to integrate advanced research training with specialty or subspecialty residency education. Through dedicated research time, mentorship, and graduate or postdoctoral training, CIP prepares future physician-investigators for successful careers in academic medicine and health research.
Before You Apply
Applicants should:
- Be enrolled in, or planning to enter, a Royal College-accredited specialty or subspecialty residency training program.
- Have a clear interest in pursuing a career that combines research and clinical practice.
- Identify a potential research supervisor and research training pathway.
- Explore graduate degree or postdoctoral research opportunities that align with their research interests.

Additional Application Requirements for Postdoctoral Applicants
In addition to the documents listed above:
- Summary of previous research experience
- Project start and end dates
- Publications (first page only)
- Reference letter from previous research supervisor and/or PhD supervisor
- Letter outlining supervisory and progress monitoring plan
- List of two faculty members who will participate on the research advisory committee
Current CIP Learners (for MOH-CIP funding competition)
- Current CV (CIHR format preferred)
- A one-page statement of current project, progress, and future plans
- Program Director Support Form (PDF)
- Research Supervisor Attestation of Research Support Form (PDF)
Annual Application Deadlines:
- January 15 for Ministry of Health-CIP Funding Competition and new CIP trainee Applications for July 1 enrollment
- May 1 for new CIP trainee Applications for July 1 enrollment
- November 1 for new CIP trainee Applications for January 1 enrollment
If the deadline falls on a weekend, your application would be due the following Monday.
Application Packages are to be emailed to the CIP office at uoft.cip@utoronto.ca
PLEASE NOTE: Your acceptance into CIP and/or for MOH-CIP Funding is conditional upon acceptance into your graduate unit.
