About

The Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) is pleased to announce the newly established CIP Research Supervisor Award which honors a faculty member who demonstrates exemplary and sustained commitment to mentoring CIP trainees, fostering their scholarly development, and advancing research excellence within the Clinician Investigator Program. This award acknowledges the altruistic nature of mentorship and its impact on trainee success and academic medicine. 

Eligibility 

  • Holds a faculty appointment at the University of Toronto and graduate faculty membership with the University of Toronto, School of Graduate Studies.

  • Demonstrated substantial contribution to mentorship within the CIP through dedicated service and leadership.

  • Active supervision of CIP trainees within the past 3 years.

Selection Criteria

In general, nominees should have a record of providing exceptional supervision and guidance, supporting trainee career development and well-being. 

Nominees will be evaluated based on:

  1. Mentorship Excellence
    • Provides high-quality supervision and guidance.
    • Supports trainee career development and well-being.
  2. Research Environment
    • Creates an inclusive, collaborative, and productive research environment.
  3. Scholarly Impact
    • Encourages and facilitates trainee publications, presentations, and grant applications.
  4. Commitment to CIP Values
    • Promotes integrity, professionalism, and lifelong learning.
  5. Sustained Track Record
    • Evidence of consistent, high-quality mentorship over time.
  6. Leadership & Innovation
    • Contributions to advancing mentorship practices within CIP.
  7. Impact
    • Testimonials and outcomes demonstrating influence on trainee career development and scholarly success.
    • Demonstrated commitment to promoting Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity, and Accessibility within the research environment and mentorship practices.
  8. Recognition
    • Previous awards or evaluations highlighting mentorship excellence.

How to Submit a Nomination

All nominations must be submitted using the online nomination form. Nominations can be completed by current and former CIP trainees, or faculty colleagues. Self nominations are allowed with the required supporting documentation. 

When completing the form, you will be asked to provide the following:

You will be asked to provide short impact statement (up to ~300 words each) describing how the nominee demonstrates each criterion. Speak to the scope of the work, the nominee's role in it, and examples of impact.
Curriculum Vitae of nominee
You will be asked to upload the nominee's CV (standard U of T format).
Up to two letters of support from trainees (optional)
You will be asked to upload up to two short learner testimonies of up to ~300 words each (optional). These short personal testimonies should describe the writer’s support for the nomination. These are not meant to be a summary of the nominee's merits and accomplishments but rather should highlight specific experiences the writer has had with the nominee, and how these impacted the person writing the testimony, or a group, institution or discipline. Examples are stronger than adjectives.   

Selection Process

A Selection Committee will review and evaluate all nominations according to the award selection criteria. This Committee is comprised of CIP leadership, faculty representatives, and trainee representatives.

Award Presentation

  • Presented annually at the Medical Education Achievement Celebration.
  • Recipient will receive:
    • Framed award certificate
    • Recognition on the CIP website and in CIP Insider newsletter.
    • Invitation to present on mentorship as part of the CIP workshop series.
